CHOICE OF SUBJECTS

BASIC EDUCATION CERTIFICATE EXAMINATION (BECE) FOR JUNIOR SECONDARY


A student at Junior Secondary Level is required to choose thirteen subjects for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
These include the core subjects and any of the electives.

SENIOR SECONDARY CERTIFICATE EXAMINATION


Based on the new Senior Secondary Education Curriculum Structure, students at the Senior Secondary level are required to choose eight (8) subjects or nine (9) for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the National Examination Council (NECO) Examinations. The subject classification are placed in four categories namely:

  • Compulsory core subjects
  • Sciences
  • Arts and Social Sciences

NOTE:

  1. All students must offer all compulsory cross cutting subjects. Students, in addition to the compulsory subjects, will offer 3 - 4 subjects from their field of specialization and one elective.
  2. SS2 are to offer a minimum of 10 subjects and a maximum of 9 to be registered for the Senior School Certificate Examinations (WAEC and NECO).
  3. SS1 are to offer 14 subjects, which must include Biology, Economics and 4 others.

PROMOTION TO NEW CLASSES


  1. Promotion shall be based on cumulative assessment of 1st, 2nd and 3rd term examination scores of students.
  2. For a student to be promoted, he/she must have a pass in Mathematics and English
  3. A student must pass relevant subjects in their class before she is promoted. For example, a student in Science class must pass her science subjects to be promoted; likewise the Humanities.

CONDITION FOR ADMISSION INTO SCIENCE CLASS SS1


For a student to be admitted into the Science classes in SS1, she must pass English Language, Mathematics, Basic Science and Basic Technology in the JS3 Promotion Examination.

NOTE:

  1. Transfer of class from Science to Humanities is only allowed in SS1 after the first term.
